Mr Darroch is a Senior Lecturer and has been the Academic Coordinator of Agricultural Economics, Management and Agribusiness at UKZN since 2002. He was dux student of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Natal (UNP) in 1982, and was the first student to be awarded the BScAgric degree summa cum laude. He was awarded a National Scholarship as best student in any faculty at UNP in 1982. He received the MScAgric degree cum laude from UNP in 1987, and was the first MScAgric recipient of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science Bronze Medal. Mr Darroch also won the 1987 Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA) Best Masters Thesis Prize.


His main research activities include agribusiness (eg the economics of specialty crops; food and agricultural business strategy; supply chain issues), farm and rural finance (eg impacts of monetary policy on agriculture; determinants of loan repayment performance); the economics of land valuation, and agricultural price, marketing and policy analysis. He has published over 80 articles, book chapters and reports on these research areas, and received eight article publication awards. He earned UNP Merit awards for Meritorious Service in Research in 1995 and 1998, and Merit Notch Awards in 2002 (UNP) and 2005 (UKZN) for Consistently Outstanding Research and Teaching. Mr Darroch was awarded the prestigious 1998 British Petroleum Research Scholarship in Agriculture to study factors that influence farm and agribusiness firms in selecting strategies to manage change, at Purdue University, USA. While at Purdue University, he also wrote case studies on the economics of the high oleic acid soybean value chain in the USA for the Centre for Agricultural Business, and lectured on Food and Agricultural Business Strategy.



Mr Darroch has refereed articles for six academic journals and conference papers for AEASA, The International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE) and the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association (IAMA). He has presented papers on his main research activities at international conferences held in Hungary, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia, the Netherlands, Mexico, and Argentina. He served as a Guest Lecturer for the Standard Bank of South Africa Agricultural Credit Management Development Programme in 1998. He was appointed as an Associate Lecturer in Corporate Strategy, by the Surrey European Management School (SeMS), University of Surrey, United Kingdom, in 2002. Mr Darroch was invited in 2005 to join the McKinsey Quarterly Online Executive Panel of the world-renowned business consulting firm McKinsey & Company, to help identify global challenges faced by business executives and what strategies could be used to better manage these challenges.
